Their first stop was at a small, neat cottage on the edge of town. He knocked on the door and stood stamping the snow off his feet for a few seconds.

A tiny woman, dressed in a warm dress, a sweater, and a shawl, opened the door a crack and peeked out. When she saw Gus, she threw the door open wide.

“Mr. Travers! You are a sight for sore eyes. It seems like forever since I’ve seen you.”

Gus looked slightly shamed-face. “It has been, I’m afraid, Mrs. Gwinett. Christmas last year. I always mean to come by more often, but I get all caught up in my plans and—“

“Of all the people I’ve met in my life, you’ve got the least amount to apologize for. You do the work of the angels.”

Gus looked down. “That’s very kind of you to say. I’ve got a load of wood for you. I’ll fill up your shed in back, but I thought I might start you a fire here in the house first. Is that okay?”

Stella Gwinett stepped back. “I haven’t built one yet today, so that would be wonderful.”

“Great. I’ve got some cedar kindling set aside for you. That will make it easy for you to light every morning. I’ve kept this wood under cover since last spring, so it shouldn’t give you much trouble.”

He turned over his shoulder and shouted, “Billy boy, jump out and start unloading the wood for Mrs. Gwinett, will you? I’m going to light her a fire.”

Five minutes later, the fire was going and a rosy glow of warmth spread out from it. When Gus had first walked in, he had been able to see his breath in the air.

Gus jogged out to the trailer, grabbed an armload of split wood and carried it inside. He set it beside the woodstove. “There. As soon as that burns down to coals, drop some of these in there, and you’ll be warm all day.”

He glanced around the tiny house. Everything in it, from Mrs. Gwinett to the furniture, to the embroidered God Bless This House which hung on the wall, seemed from another era. Gus felt like he had slipped into a sepia-toned picture.

“Any big plans for the day, then?”

“Oh, no. All my people live so far away. Too far to drive when a storm might come along.”

Gus nodded. “We’ve got an awful nice dinner down at the Community Center at 3:00. I’m making a turkey and I know there will be more food than can be eaten. Why don’t you come down there?”

“I think I might just do that,” Mrs. Gwinett said. She stood as tall as she could and brushed her thin lips against Gus’s cheek. “It’s true, you know. I think you are what they call you—the Christmas Angel.”

Gus shook his head. “I just enjoy helping out where I can. Billy and I do this together every year. I don’t get to see him as much as I want, either, so this makes Christmas special for us, too.
